Spanish Moorish style incorporated into an architecturally modern convention and events center.
The challenge was to incorporate Spanish Moorish style into an architecturally modern convention and events center. A jewel in the landscape of Zamboanga, known as “Asia’s Latin City”, it was designed with Filipino-Hispanic style leanings while still emanating a warm welcome to guests of all cultures and nationalities. The reception area’s capiz surface was inspired by Zamboanga’s famous vintas (The boats are made by Sama-Bajau and Moros living in the Sulu Archipelago, Zamboanga peninsula, and southern Mindanao made of colorful patterns representing the variety of peoples living in the region). Moorish inspired elements are incorporated subtly via the arches and grill work all throughout the center. A cafe under the elevator makes use of an otherwise neglected space in the lobby. It is something the Zamboangeños can call their very own, the Marcian Group’s Palacio Del Sur.
*Architectural design is by Giancarlo Libarnes and Nikki dela Paz-Libarnes.
